Summary

This course provides an introduction to some of the world’s major art collections. Each week will be devoted to one city and its art collections and these will include London’s Tate Britain, the Vatican Museum, the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, Munich’s Alte and Neue Pinakothek Galleries and Dublin’s National Gallery of Ireland.   

Areas you'll explore include:  

  • The history of the selected art collections.  
  • Key individual major works in each collection. 
  • How the and the museums are set within the broader historical, cultural and social developments of their time. 

By the end of this course students will be able to: 

  • Demonstrate familiarity with the art within each collection.  
  • Contextualise the history of the formation of each collection. 
  • Interpret and discuss with confidence the selected artists and artworks.
